I started my journey of outdoor sports in high school. Coming from a background of the traditional team sports that I played up until my junior year, a friend introduced me to rock climbing. After one weekend trip I was completely hooked…. From then on i was totally obsessed with it… that’s all I ever wanted to do… right before I graduated high school I found whitewater kayaking or, my second obsession… these two sports completely changed my life and pointed me in the direction of adventure. After school I decided to travel the country and different parts of the world in search of mountains to climb and rivers to paddle.
I dedicated myself to the lifestyle and soon became a professional mountain guide as well as a professional kayaker… I spent several years living on the fringe and pushing my limits of what I could do.
And then, came along this amazing little human that I created…. And my life changed completely again. From the moment she showed up I knew this is what I was put here to do. From her beginning I had her with me outside. I’d carry her everywhere with me, and as soon as she was walking, man we were all over the place.
Bella was rock climbing by the age of two. Hanging and swinging from ropes, hiking when she could and playing in the creeks. When she hit the age of 7 she got to do her first multi pitch, big free climb in Colorado and paddled class IV whitewater.
Shortly after that I started to get into endurance sports like doing triathlons and running and riding trail races. Bella and I would compete in a lot of races together such as kayak races and mountain triathlons that she could do… that was the coolest thing to me to race with my kid.
My daughter is now 16 and I feel so lucky to spend everyday with her… we lift weights together 3 days a week and climb together 2 days a week.. she competes on a climbing team and is a 4.0 student in the classroom… I’ve competed in Ironmans and 100 mile trail races and she’s been there every step of the way…
I’ve always felt that it was important to show her the things in life that really have value. One of those being, doing the hard things. That’s where discipline and character come from. When a child can grasp that, it makes an unstoppable adult.
I’ve always said , as I teach her, she teaches me. That’s high value in my book.
